Academic Positions, School of Advanced Studies (University of Tyumen, Russia)

For historians and social scientists looking for something off the beaten track, here's a recent call for applications from the newly-established School of Advanced Studies, a greenfield project being built from the ground up at Tyumen State University. (Tyumen is a major city in central Russia, near the border with Kazakhstan, and a major hub for the Siberian oil and gas industry.)  Specifically, the school aims to appoint scholars for (initial) 3-year contracts with the possibility of renewal:

School of Advanced Studies (SAS) is a greenfield project to be launched in the Fall of 2017. It will bring together 40 permanent faculty from different countries willing to work together in a number of interrelated multidisciplinary projects in social sciences and the humanities, including in the areas merging with IT and life sciences. We aim to tailor SAS research agenda around challenging problems of contemporary scholarship in order to produce results relevant for scholarly communities globally.

SAS BA program will use an honor's college model, with high selectivity, comprehensive general education core, small classes, individualized tracks, and late choice of major among Cultural Studies, Sociology & Anthropology, Film & Media, History, Economics, IT, and Life Sciences. MA programs will be designed to correspond to SAS faculty research interests.

More on the application process here:

We invite applications from scholars with any area of expertise in the humanities and social sciences at different stages of their academic careers (PhD required at the time of appointment) who want to use a unique chance to shape a new institution. It is also a rare opportunity of multiple simultaneous appointments that can be granted to those wishing to work together on a research project. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate strong commitment to teaching and ability to communicate effectively across disciplinary boundaries. Knowledge of Russian is not required.

Most appointments will be on individual 3-year contracts with a possibility of renewal. The teaching load in most cases will be equivalent to 2+2 on the semester system with most SAS faculty having one quartile a year free of teaching in addition to summer vacation. SAS will pay competitive salaries well above national average and provide benefits. Information about the city of Tyumen is here
