Applications Open: Executive Director, Toynbee Prize Foundation

The Toynbee Prize Foundation is seeking to make an appointment of an Executive Director, to begin on September 15, 2019. The position is part-time (ca. 5 hours per week), and the current compensation is US$6000 per annum. In addition, the executive director has the chance to travel to Toynbee Prize Foundation events. While the foundation is located in Boston, Massachusetts, the executive director can be based anywhere in the world. The executive director will mainly communicate with other foundation members via email and teleconferences, and so strong communication skills in English in addition to one's native language are a must.

Qualified candidates must hold at least a Bachelor's Degree in History or a related subject. Ideally, they will either be enrolled in a Master's or doctoral program, or employed as a post-doctoral research fellow. Qualified candidates should be conversant in current debates in the fields of global history and interested in reporting on and advancing the state of the field through their work for the Foundation. They should speak and write fluently in English and have some basic proficiency in managerial as well as organizational skills, including familiarity with computing.

The Executive Director is responsible for all programming on the Toynbee Prize Foundation's website (www.toynbeeprize.org). Historically, the role has involved the preparation of profile-style interviews with leading scholars of global history, overseeing the work of a team of volunteer Editors-at-Large, and placing recent global history news on the website. In addition to this work for the website, the Executive Director is expected to manage the annual operations of the Toynbee Prize Foundation, in particular its annual Trustees' Meeting (in October), its activities at the American Historical Association Annual Meeting (in January), and the awarding of the Toynbee Prize (awarded bi-annually in early summer).

The Foundation expects to make an appointment to begin on September 15, 2019 or earlier. For the first weeks of the position, the new Executive Director will work with the outgoing Executive Director in order to ensure a smooth transition.

Named after Arnold J.Toynbee, the Toynbee Prize Foundation was chartered in 1987 "to contribute to the development of the social sciences, as defined from a broad historical view of human society and of human and social problems." The Foundation seeks to promote scholarly engagement with global history through several activities. Foremost among these is the Toynbee Prize, an award granted every other year to recognize outstanding work in global history. As an affiliated society of the American Historical Association, the Foundation sponsors one session at the Association's annual meeting. In the years in which the Prize is awarded, the recipient presents a lecture. In alternate years, the Foundation sponsors a session on global history.

Applications are due on July 31, 2019 and should include a one-page cover letter and a current CV. Applications and further inquiries should be directed to current Executive Director Aden Knaap at toynbeefoundation@gmail.com.
