Bruce Mazlish (1923-2016)

The Toynbee Prize Foundation regrets to announce that Bruce Mazlish, the President of the Toynbee Prize Foundation in the late 1980s and 1990s and a leading scholar of global history, intellectual history, and psychohistorical approaches, passed away on Sunday in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Mazlish, who was Professor Emeritus of History at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was 93.

The Toynbee Prize Foundation is in the process of preparing a tribute to Bruce Mazlish's accomplishments in the field of global history - including, not least, the receipt of the Toynbee Prize in 1986-1987. In the meantime, the New York Times has published an obituary that summarizes some of Mazlish's legacy, including his contributions to psychohistorical approaches in the 1970s.

Former colleagues and friends of Mazlish's who wish to contribute a memory of Mazlish as a friend, colleague, or mentor for inclusion in our forthcoming tribute are invited to contact the Executive Director of the Toynbee Prize Foundation, Dr. Timothy Nunan.
