Graduate Student Global History Conference – Tufts University, March 5, 2016
Are you a graduate student based in or around New England and interested in getting feedback on your global history project – a dissertation chapter, an article-in-draft, or a new project? The Tufts History Department has announced a Graduate Student Global History Conference to take place on March 5, 2016 at Tufts University, in Medford, MA.
This year's event, the organizers note, is dedicated to the memory of the late Tufts historian Christopher Schmidt-Nowara, a historian of the Iberian Atlantic who was a leading figure in the Global History PhD program at Tufts prior to his unexpected passing.
The call for submissions reads as follows:
Within the past decade, the sub-field of Global History has grown in importance, becoming the foremost analytical cutting edge for historical research. Indeed, the rise of Global History has initiated a process of erosion within the discipline, washing away the barricades that have limited historical interpretation to the methods of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
What does it mean, however, to research and write within a global paradigm? Does the nation-state remain a valuable analytic tool? Or, has the time come to discard it altogether, focusing instead on the global circuits of exchange, trade, and interaction that underlay national frameworks?
The Tufts graduate student conference on Global History seeks to answer these questions, and more, as we meet to discuss and deliberate on the state of Global History in 2016. While we welcome abstracts from any field, we are particularly interested in the following: theories and methods of Global History, development, empires and nations, slavery, colonialism, and diaspora.
If this sounds like you, the organizers request that applicants send a 300-500 word abstract, a working title for their paper, and a CV to tuftsglobalhistory@gmail.com no later than midnight on Friday, November 13, 2015. Authors of successful proposals will hear back a week later, on November 20, 2015.
