Jerry Bentley Prize in World History (American Historical Association)
While this current calendar year already portends to be full of terrific works in global history, now might also be the time to start thinking of the works that most impressed you in 2015. That's because the American Historical Association has recently announced a call for nominations for its 2015 Jerry Bentley Prize, a recently-established award named in memory of University of Hawaii professor Jerry Bentley and given to "the best book in each calendar year in the field of world history."
The announcement on the website of the American Historical Association explains the precise rules:
- Any book published in English dealing with global or world-scale history, with connections or comparisons across continents, in any period will be eligible.
- Books bearing a copyright of 2015 are eligible for the 2016 prize.
- Nominators must complete an online prize submission form for each book submitted.
- One copy of each entry must be sent to each committee member and clearly labeled "Bentley Prize Entry." Electronic copies may be sent only to committee members who have indicated they will accept them.
If any ideas for nominations come to mind—and here we might suggest looking at our many interview pieces for the Global History Forum in 2015–then use the form on the AHA's website. Those nominating books will note that one copy of the book to be nominated should go to the members of the Prize Committee, namely Andrew Sartori (NYU), Daniel Smail (Harvard), and Heather Streets-Salter (Northeastern). That means three books total. All nomination materials must be in by May 15, 2016 for nominations to be considered. The winning book will be honored at the 2017 American Historical Association annual meeting in Denver, Colorado from January 5-8, 2017.
