Assistant Professor of U.S. Diplomatic/International/Transnational History (The Ohio State University)

As readers of our Global History Forum interviews with scholars like Ryan Irwin, Jenifer Van Vleck, or Daniel Immerwahr might discern, the field of U.S. diplomatic history is one of the liveliest fields in the historical profession these days. That's a trend only like to continue as more junior positions open up – like this one at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio:

The Department of History in the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor (tenure-eligible) with a research focus on the international and transnational nature of the foreign relations of the United States; possible topics may include the relationship between U.S. power and global economic regimes, the effects of cultural diffusion on the international power system, the transnational structures, movements, and state and non-state agents within the United States that affect geopolitics, geostrategy, international affairs, etc. We seek a candidate who possesses a demonstrated ability to use sources in relevant languages on the other side of U.S. foreign relations, with a strong preference for candidates who utilize federally designated critical languages in their research. The successful candidate will demonstrate a rigorous commitment to research, teaching, and service. The department expects the successful candidate to promote interdisciplinary research and collaboration, including (but not limited to) other humanities, social science and policy-related disciplines, centers, and programs. The Ohio State University and the Department of History place tremendous value on faculty diversity and, as such, we are eager to receive applications from candidates from diverse backgrounds.

Qualifications: Applicants must hold the Ph.D. at time of appointment and must demonstrate an actual or potential record of sustained publication commensurate with the expectations at a research university. They must also have a demonstrated ability or the clear potential for excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate students. Preferred qualifications include program experience, university teaching experience, and experience mentoring members of underrepresented groups.

Those interested in applying should use the interface at Academic Jobs Online. As the call for applications notes, "a complete application consists of a cover letter, curriculum vitae, three letters of reference, one article-length sample of written work, one sample syllabus for a United States diplomatic history survey course, and one sample syllabus for a lecture or seminar course on a subject of the candidate's choosing." The deadline is November 7, 2016, with Jennifer Siegel being the contact person for questions and inquiries.
