PhD Opportunity, "Women and the History of International Thought"
PhD Student Opportunity: Women and the History of International Thought, University of Sussex Deadline: February 14, 2018 Start date: September/October 2018
Project Description The PhD researcher will recover and evaluate women's contributions to the International Relations discipline in the United States, from the end of World War I until 1979. Although disciplinary history is a growing field there are currently no histories of women in the IR discipline. Hence, the PhD will address a significant gap by covering IR's most influential location. The PhD researcher will undertake nine months of research training and gaining knowledge of American IR history and theory and women's intellectual history and undertake six months research in the United States examining US-based university archives and personal papers, and conducting interviews.
Co-supervised by Professor Patricia Owens (International Relations) and Dr. Katharina Rietzler (History), the PhD researcher will undertake training in both fields, participate in the activities of the Sussex Centre for Intellectual History and the Sussex Centre for Advanced International Theory.
In the first instance, please apply for International Relations in the School of Global Studies as the PhD degree. This will be revised at a later date if you wish to pursue a History PhD.
Funding Notes (for EU/UK students) The Studentship covers full-time UK/EU tuition fees, plus an annual maintenance stipend of £14,296 for up to four years. The maximum period of registration is four years and funding beyond Year 1 is dependent upon satisfactory progress. You will also have access to travel funds for archival research in the United States as part of the Leverhulme project research.
Applicants should have an outstanding record (ideally, though not necessarily) in the field of International Relations or History at both undergraduate and MA level.
References In your application, please indicate the name of the scholarship and mention Professor Patricia Owens and Dr. Katharina Rietzler as the proposed supervisors.
Remember to include a CV and detailed covering letter explaining how your experience, interests, and vision for the project equips you to carry out the research.
Interviews will be held in Mid March, with a view to a September start.
